Charlie's Wish Bags

Charlie White Eagle, one of our members, made a wish during our open prayer time that the homeless would be provided with their needs. He told how he would take his extra hats and gloves and give them to the homeless. This started an amazing ministry in our congregation. We all bring hats, gloves, socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, tissues, flashlights, easy-open and easy-heated canned goods, bibles, soap, washcloths, towels, and so forth. They are packed in easy to carry book bags or backpacks and anyone who feels the calling will carry one in their car so when they see a homeless person, they can give it to them.

Family Promise Interfaith Hospitality Network

Through a coordinated effort and partnership with 23 faith communities of various traditions in Washoe County, families are provided with three meals a day, and a safe place to sleep at night.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church is one of these 23 faith communities that participate as a support congregation in the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) that is part of the Family Promise program in the Reno-Sparks community. Our congregation partners with the First United Methodist Church congregation in downtown Reno 5-6 times per year to provide transitional housing (at FUMC) and meals for 3-4 homeless families enrolled in the Family Promise program. St. Paul’s UMC volunteers donate food for breakfast and lunch, provide dinners, and stay overnight at FUMC with the families during their hosting weeks.

During the day, families utilize the Family Promise Day Center which acts as a home base. At the Day Center families have use of a telephone, laundry and shower facilities, Internet for job searches and completion of school projects, and an address from which important applications can be submitted.

Family Promise staff help families set goals that will be worked on during their stay in the IHN program with a focus being on permanent housing and stable and sustainable income.
